Susan Summers of Chatham, NJ, thought that March 17, 2008, would be just another ordinary day. She woke up planning to bring her two year old son to music class and then bring her five year old daughter to preschool with green bagels in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
But March 17th wasn’t an ordinary day for Susan.
After Susan didn’t make her appointments, friends rushed to Susan’s house and discovered Susan disorientated with a gash on her cheek. After immediately calling 911, Susan was rushed to the hospital where doctors discovered that the gash on her cheek was due to falling in the bathroom after she had suffered an ischemic stroke.
Susan was only 39 years old at the time.
Over the next month, Susan suffered two more strokes, including a hemorrhagic stroke that required a craniectomy to relieve the bleeding in her brain.
After making remarkable strides, doctors advised Susan and her family that she would need in-patient rehab for 9-12 weeks. But Susan was determined to return to her family and continued to make major improvements, learning how to walk and regain function of her paralyzed left side and was able to return home after only nine days. Susan continued with outpatient rehab until December.
Susan is doing well today and back to her full time job as the mother of two active and healthy children. She makes sure to follow up with her doctors, take medication and stays healthy by eating right and exercising.
She makes the choice to Go Red.
